Basal stem rot, caused by the fungus Ganoderma boninense, is the most destructive disease of oil palm across Malaysia and Indonesia. A recent industry survey found it affecting an estimated 9.2% of smallholder plantings, slightly higher than the 7.4% incidence found on estates — which makes it worth every smallholder’s attention, not just large operators.
What it is
The fungus attacks the base of the trunk and the root system, rotting the tissue that carries water and nutrients up the palm. It spreads mainly through root contact with infected material in the soil, including old, decaying palm stumps left from a previous planting — which is why replanted land often shows higher incidence than first-generation plantings.
Early signs to check for
- Unopened spear leaf — the newest, innermost frond fails to unfurl normally.
- Drooping and yellowing of the older fronds, often resembling drought stress even when the palm has had adequate water.
- Slowed overall growth and a generally pale canopy compared to neighbouring healthy palms.
- Fruiting bodies (the bracket-shaped "mushrooms" the fungus is named for) at the base of the trunk — by the time these are visible, the infection is usually well advanced internally.
Individually, several of these can look like drought or nutrient stress. What makes Ganoderma worth suspecting specifically is a young palm showing this combination of symptoms with no obvious water or fertiliser problem, especially on land that was replanted rather than newly opened.
Why there’s no cure
Once basal stem rot is established, there is no chemical treatment that reliably cures an infected palm — a young palm typically dies within 6–12 months of first symptoms appearing. This is the single most important fact about the disease: everything useful happens before or around infection, not after.
What management actually means

None of this cures an infected palm — it slows the disease’s spread to its neighbours, which on a small lot is the difference between losing one palm and losing a whole section over a few years.

Survival is uncommon once internal rot is established — the practical goal of "catching it early" is removing the palm before it becomes a source of infection for its neighbours, not saving that individual palm.
