Any figure claiming to be “the average cost of running an oil palm lot” hides more than it reveals — lot size, soil, terrain, and whether labour is hired or family all swing the real number by a large margin. The cost categories
- Fertiliser — the largest planned cost for most lots; see fertiliser cost per acre.
- Harvesting labour and haulage — recurring every round; see what a round really pays.
- Weeding and general upkeep — either hired or your own time.
- Pest and disease management — irregular, but real when it happens.
- Tools, repairs, fuel for equipment used on the lot.

What’s usually the biggest cost?
For most hired-labour setups, harvesting labour and haulage over the whole year usually exceeds fertiliser, simply because it recurs every round rather than three or four times a year.
Does family labour change this significantly?
